Monzo statements: use native CSV before converting a PDF
Monzo already provides native CSV statement exports in its UK app, so PDF conversion is often unnecessary for a spreadsheet review. Retain the PDF when you also need the issued account record. The main review question is account scope: Monzo says exports include Pots, and movements between the main balance and a Pot should not automatically be classified as new spending or income.
Get the right document first
- Open the UK Monzo app and go to Home.
- Use the three-dot menu associated with the account card.
- Open Bank statements.
- Choose the required date range and select PDF, CSV or QIF from the available formats.
- Save the export and verify which main-account and Pot records it contains before combining rows.
These instructions come from Monzo’s UK help. Monzo publishes separate guidance for other countries and some savings or business products, so check the product shown in your own app.
PDF statement or native transaction export?
Use CSV for spreadsheet rows and PDF for the document reference. QIF is a financial-software interchange format; it is not an Excel workbook. Monzo’s native export avoids OCR and PDF table reconstruction, although date parsing, account scope and classification still require review.
Monzo’s UK help states that statements and transaction exports include Pots. Inspect the file’s actual sections and identifiers before joining them into a single table. A transfer to a Pot can be useful to track saving behaviour, but adding both sides to income or spending would misstate the external movement of money.
Checks that matter for this account
Pot transfers are internal movements
Keep both source entries when present and classify them explicitly. Do not silently remove one as a duplicate simply because the amounts match.
Requested date range
Store the chosen start and end dates with the export. Repeating a download for overlapping periods can create repeated rows when files are merged.
Main and joint account distinction
Use the account selected in the app and the identifiers in the file. Do not assume a personal and a joint account are one ledger.
Closed-account record
Monzo says it emails a full payment history when an account closes and protects that document with a password sent separately. Do not confuse that delivery with the normal in-app export.
Build a spreadsheet you can review
Import the CSV into a raw sheet rather than overwriting it. Preserve any Pot or account identifier, the original description and the source date. Add a category field and an internal-transfer flag in a separate working sheet. Use the PDF for page-level reference only where the file actually supplies the corresponding account record.
For a synthetic example, moving £100.00 from a current-account balance into a Pot changes where the money is held but is not a £100.00 merchant purchase. A separate £25.00 card payment is external spending. Define whether your report covers the main account alone or the combined scope before checking balances and category totals.
FAQ · Monzo
Can Monzo give me CSV directly?
Yes. Monzo’s UK help lists PDF, CSV and QIF under Bank statements in the app. Choose CSV for a spreadsheet before considering PDF conversion.
Do Monzo exports include Pots?
The UK help says they do. Inspect the downloaded file’s structure and preserve account or Pot identifiers when combining records.
Should I remove a transfer to a Pot as a duplicate?
No. Keep the source movement and classify it as an internal transfer where the evidence supports that. Duplicate review and spending classification are different tasks.
Official bank references
The bank’s instructions take precedence. Menus and export options can differ by account, device and agreement.
